Allium ampeloprasum
Leeks are biennial members of the onion family that are grown for their delicate onion flavor in soups and salads.
How to Grow: Culture of leeks is similar to that of onions, but in some ways leeks are easier to grow. Sow seed indoors in flats 10-12 weeks before setting out transplants 2-6″ apart in rows 18″ apart. Leeks require loose, fertile soil kept well watered through the growing season. The stalks can be blanched by hilling up the soil around the stalks.
Packet: 3g (approximately 1100 seeds) sows 40’ direct-seeded or 120’ as transplants.
